Angela Lansbury has died. She was 96. The ‘Murder, She Wrote’ star’s family says in a statement on Tuesday, ‘The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM.’ While she was best known to many as mystery writer Jessica Fletcher, Angela won five Tony awards across her prolific theater career. She also voiced Mrs. Potts in Disney’s animated classic ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and sang the musical’s beloved title song.

Dame Angela Lansbury’s career in entertainment was as long-lived and as varied as they come. She was a star during Hollywood’s Golden Age. She was a Broadway icon. She appeared on living room TV sets as the beloved Jessica Fletcher in “Murder, She Wrote” for 12 seasons. She somehow wrenched hearts even as a singing teapot in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”

The actress, who starred in TV drama Murder, She Wrote, died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles early on Tuesday, her family said.
