TUTHILL SLAVE CEMETERY (1700’s) ORIENT, NEW YORK

A historic marker erected by the Oysterponds Museum notes that Dr. Seth Tuthill (1784-1850) directed that he and his wife, Maria (died 1840), be buried with their servants. Many Tuthill slaves, whose graves have unmarked stones, stayed on as servants after manumission in 1827.
