St. Phillips’s Church (1904) Brooklyn, NY

*ST. PHILLIP’S CHURCH (1904) IT WAS THEN LOCATED AT 1610 DEAN STREET, BETWEEN TROY AND SCHENEETADY AVENUES (c. WEEKSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY)

St. Phillips Church was organized in 1904, and located at 1610 Dean Street, between Troy and Schenectady avenues in Brooklyn, New York.  Its first members met in the home of Mrs. Esther Reese in 1899.  In 1903, the Reverend N. Peterson Boyd became the churches first rector.  Its new building, completed in 1914, was planned and constructed by Black men.  Reverend Boyd was physically active in the building process. The first Black Company of the United Boys Brigade of America (the forerunner of the Boy Scouts) was chartered at St. Phillip’s in 1907.
