St. James A.M.E. Church (1842) Newark, NJ

St. James A.M.E. Church, originally known as Bethel A.M.E., was organized about 1842 by Reverend C. Birch in a humble building on Green Street in Newark, New Jersey.  From 1842 to 1888, the congregation worshipped in many places, including a church on Arlington Street; a hall at Market and Washington streets; a lodge hall on Broad Street, the present site of the Central Railroad Station and twice in Alhambra Hall at 73 New Street near Washington Street. While at Alhambra Hall, the financial affairs of the church became so dire that the congregation decided to disband.  It immediately reorganized under the name of St. James A.M.E. Church.  Under Reverend William H. Giles, the church secured a building on Union Street in 1895, which remained the churchs home until 1945.
