This series includes original tax ratables from the period 1773-1822, as well as photocopies of several tax lists currently in the custody of various historical societies. For further information on ratables, see Kenn Stryker-Rodda’s introduction to the published lists, “New Jersey Rateables, 1778-1780,” Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, 41(1):19-22, January 1966. Name indexes to the New Jersey tax ratables include:

Jackson, Ronald Vern. New Jersey Tax Lists, 1772-1822. (Salt Lake City, UT: Accelerated Indexing Systems, 1981). 5 vols. [The beginning date listed in the title is incorrect; the work does not include a number of municipalities and/or entire counties].

Stryker-Rodda, Kenn. Revolutionary Census of New Jersey: An Index, Based on Rateables, Of the Inhabitants of New Jersey, During the Period of the American Revolution. (Lambertville, NJ: Hunterdon House, 1986).

T.L.C. Genealogy. Hunterdon County, New Jersey Taxpayers, 1778-1797. (Miami Beach, FL: 1990).

T.L.C. Genealogy. Bergen County, New Jersey Taxpayers, 1778-1797. (Miami Beach, FL: 1990).

The following guide provides book, box, and item number for each ratable (listed in order by county, municipality, and date). The column labelled “GMNJ” shows citations to the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey for published (Revolutionary War-era) ratables. The last column provides New Jersey State Archives microfilm reel numbers for the ratables that have been filmed. See also, “An Assesment Laid on the Inhabitants of Woodbridge pursuant to a Town order Made the 6 of the Instant August 1768 For the Support of the Poor, Samuel Force, Assesser,” a photostat of which can be found in the New Jerseyana Collection of the New Jersey State Library (A974.941 W883).
