Oldmans Creek, NJ

Oldmans Township

Borders Carney’s Point and Pilesgrove Township as well as the Delaware River and Oldmans Creek, which also borders Logan Township in Gloucester County. The Spitfire Aerodome (FAA LID: 7N7) is a small municipal airport located in Oldmans Township and is the only one of its kind in Salem County.

Oldmans Township is home to the communities of Pedricktown and Auburn. Oldmans Creek once experienced great activitiy as a shipping port and at only 20 square miles, managed to support 14 wharfs between Pedricktown and Auburn, shipping hundreds of thousands of baskets of produce. In the early 1900’s, the Army Corp of Engineers dug 9 cut-offs, shortening and straightening the length of the creek between New Bridge and Auburn.

In 1860, Mr. James Sweeten began a general store in Center Square and was located across the street from the present store, which was razed in 1901. The store was passed on to J. Preston Sweeten, whose Grandmother made all of the clothing sold in the store. Sweeten’s Store was loaded with merchandise during WWI and was taken by the truck load to sell to Penns Grove merchants who were having trouble getting goods. The store had kerosene tanks and was the first in town to sell gasoline – even the garages bought from the Sweetens. The store remained a general store until it was sold in 1970.
