George Barton, Dr. William Rush Dunton, Eleanor Clarke Stagle, and other pioneers of the field might marvel at some of the techniques used today in occupational therapy and might be surprised at the commercialized nature of today’s health care, but they would also recognize that the humanistic values they believed in continue to guide the practice of occupational therapy. The field has come a long way from its early beginnings and from the concepts so well-stated by its pioneers. Its future will depend on the decisions that the profession and its organization make in the years to come.
