Index to Death Records, June 1878-June 1887

This database indexes death records recorded by the New Jersey Department of Health.  Records include death certificates, as well as some burial, reburial, transit, and disinterment permits (denoted by “BP”, “RP”, “TP”, and “DI” respectively).

Data is being entered from the original Department of Health indexes.  Data entry is ongoing, and is currently complete for June 1878-June 1887.  Records for additional fiscal years (July 1-June 30 of the following year) will be added as they are completed.  The entire collection will eventually include records through December 31, 1900. The database currently indexes approximately 210,000 records.

Location refers to the county and locality where the death was registered, and in the case of permits, where the permit was issued. In cases where the index did not indicate age and/or sex “U” has been entered into the field.  The date on the various permits refers to the date the permit was issued, and the actual date of death maybe earlier, sometimes significantly earlier.

Entering the initial letter or string of letters into the Name Fields will return all records beginning with that string. To search on a string within a name, simply type “%” followed by the string.  To search for persons who were unknown or unidentified at the time of death search for “unknown” in the last name field.
