Nancy Pelosi will not seek reelection | Her message to constituents
Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced her retirement on Thursday, saying this would be her final term in Congress. Pelosi has represented California, and specifically San Francisco, in the U.S. House of Representatives since she was first elected in 1987. She made history in 2007 when she was elected the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. Prior to that, she was also the first woman elected as the House minority whip in 2001. Her decades-long career has spanned many significant moments in American history— from the AIDS epidemic when she entered office, to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and up to the latest government shutdown, which has become the longest in modern history.
Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday she will not seek reelection, capping an historic career at 20 terms.
“I have truly loved serving as your voice in Congress,” the California Democrat, 85, said in a video dedicated to her San Francisco constituents. “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.”
Pelosi’s departure will mark the end of an era in Congress. In 2007, she became the first woman elected to serve as speaker of the House.
“For our daughters and our granddaughters: today we have broken the marble ceiling,” she said at the time. To read more go to link below:
