Elmer, NJ

Elmer, New Jersey

Is home to many 200+ acre farms and is a major producer of agriculture. New Jersey ranks 5th nationally in spinach production with nearly all spinach grown in Salem County and most of that in the Elmer area. The soil has a rich deposit of silt loam with elevation above 100 feet and with the warmest seasonal temperatures in the state makes this prime farm land. Many farms have been in the same family since the Homestead Act of 1862 and are still active.

The town of Elmer flourished in the nineteenth century as a transportation center with the opening of the West Jersey Railroad line between Woodbury and Bridgeton in 1862. In the early 1900s Elmer had several thriving industries including glassworks, saw mills, feed mills and sewing factories. A point of cultural interest is the Appel Farm Arts and Music Center which is a 176 acre farm converted to a community that encourages the development of children in the arts. The center holds a festival each year on the first Saturday of June and is attended by thousands of people. Other points of interest are the many 100+ year old homes and buildings well preserved and found throughout the area.
