GEORGE CRAFT III HOUSE

aka Elizabeth Gray Vining House

According to the book “Some Homes of Mickleton,” this house was built in 1885 for George Craft II on land he had been heired from his father, George Craft III. This source goes on to say that “It was built as a tenant house for Smith Thompson one year after he married.

Perhaps the most famous occupant of this house, was Elizabeth Gray Vining, a Quaker and former tutor of Crown Prince Akihito of Japan. She wrote the book, “Windows For the Crown Prince” in this house, while living here in 1951-1952.

HISTORY OF “DEATH OF YE FOX INN” DEATH OF THE FOX TAVERN

Circa late 1800’s photograph of former Death of the Fox Inn graciously provided by Maxine Brown of Mickleton, NJ. [There are shutters on the house, and unusual pattern in the stucco that covered the stone that is now the exterior of the house. Maxine’s mother-in-law, Hannah Brown, lived in this house when she was a girl. Nate Hoffman was the owner at that time. If you recognize the woman in the photograph please contact me]
