Research Interests: Reginald Hildebrand’s primary research interest is the period and process of Emancipation in the Southern United States. He has published one book, as well as articles on racial policies of the antebellum Methodist Church. He is currently working on a study of the life and times of Richard Harvey Cain (1825–1887), a black religious and political leader in South Carolina during Reconstruction. Some Notable Publications: The Times Were Strange and Stirring: Methodist Preachers and the Crisis of Emancipation (Duke University Press, 1995).
