Kathleen Uno

Dr. Kathleen Uno is author of Passages to Modernity: Motherhood, Childhood, and Social Reform in Early Twentieth-Century Japan and co-editor of Gendering Modern Japanese History. She is currently researching Japanese children’s and women’s history with a focus on the modern and postwar periods. Dr. Uno has served as Director of the Asian Studies Program, 2002-2007, tripling the budget and the number of majors during her tenure. She is founder of the Asian American Minor, and served as its Coordinator, 2000-2008. Dr. Uno has lectured in the U.S. and abroad at institutions such as Cambridge Group for the Study of Population and Social Structure, London School of Economics in Europe, Duisburg University, and Ruhr University in Europe; Kyoto University, Ochanomizu University, Japan Women’s University in Japan; Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea; and Princeton University, University of Michigan, and Loyola University, Chicago in the U.S. She has been a Visiting Researcher at Japan Women’s University and has taught graduate and undergraduate courses at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1999-2000 and the Japan Center, at Philipps-Universitat, Marburg Germany, 1995 as visiting faculty. Dr. Uno teaches undergraduate courses such as Introduction to East Asia Japan (ancient times-1945)(creator); Modern Japan: Empire, War, and Society; Postwar Japan; Asian American History (creator), Women and Society in Japan (creator), Asian Women in Transition (creator), and Asian Studies Seminar, and graduate courses such as Introduction to Asia (creator), Gender and Sexuality in Asia (creator), Comparative Women’s History (creator), and Studies in Japanese History. She has also taught Postwar Japan Research Seminar, Modern Japan Research Seminar, Seminar in Children’s History; Feminism and History Seminar; American Writing Seminar (Topic: Asian American History); American Lives: Asian American Lives, World History, Third World History, International Women’s Writing; written course proposals for the undergraduate courses Asian Diaspora, Asian American Topics, Premodern Asia, Modern Asia, Practical Asian Society and Culture, and coauthored the course proposal for Asian Behavior and Thought.
