Jesus Cruz

Jesus Cruz specializes in Iberian history and teaches history of Spain, modern Europe, and modern Latin America. He received his B.A. from Universidad Complutense of Madrid and did his graduate training at U.C. San Diego. He is the author of Gentlemen, Bourgeois and Revolutionaries: Political change and Cultural Persistence among the Spanish Dominant Groups, 1750-1850 (CUP, 1996); Los notables de Madrid: las bases sociales de la revolución liberal española (Alianza, 2000); The Rise of Middle-Class Culture in Nineteenth-Century Spain (LSU 2011). He has published several articles and book chapters on the social and cultural history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Spain. Between 2000 and 2003 he held the position of Counselor for Education, Science, and Technology at the Embassy of Spain in Washington, DC. Professor Cruz has been the General Secretary of the Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies (April 2008-April 2010). He is the General Editor of the Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies.
