FIELDS: U.S. History, Civil Rights Movement History, Oral History, African American History. BIOGRAPHY: Elizabeth Gritter is a historian of the United States who is currently completing a book manuscript on formal black political mobilization in Memphis, Tennessee, in the Jim Crow era; it looks at the civil rights efforts of Robert R. Church, Jr., and other key figures. Dr. Gritter has presented her research at a number of conferences, including the Organization of American Historians Meeting in New York City, American Historical Association-Pacific Coast Branch meeting in Honolulu, and Little Rock School Desegregation Crisis 50th Anniversary International Conference in Little Rock. She also has published articles on her work both in scholarly formats and as op ed pieces in The Tennessean. As a research associate for the Civil Rights History Project of the Library of Congress, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and American Folklore Society, she helped complete a nationwide survey of oral history collections related to the civil rights movement; check out the findings at: http://www.loc.gov/folklife/civilrights/. Dr. Gritter is a member of the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, Southern Historical Association, and Southern Association for Women Historians.
