Sankofa African American 3D Museum (Launching Later This Year 2021)

Sunday, January 31, 2021, @ 3 pm via Zoom Presenter: Rick Geffken, Author & Trustee of the Shrewsbury Historical Society Many will probably be surprised at the revelation that New Jersey, in 1866, was the last northern state to abolish slavery. Dutch and English settlers brought the first enslaved people to New Jersey in the seventeenth century. By the time of the Revolutionary War, slavery was an established practice on labor-intensive farms throughout what became known as the Garden State. Lewis Morris brought Barbadian slaves to toil on his estate of Tinton Manor in Monmouth County. Colonel Tye, an escaped slave from Shrewsbury, joined the British Ethiopian Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Charles Reeves and Hannah Van Clief married soon after their emancipation in 1850 and became prominent citizens of Lincroft. Author Rick Geffken reveals stories from New Jersey’s dark history of slavery. Rick has written numerous books including Highland Beach, Gateway to the Jersey Shore, 1888-1962 with Chris Brenner; and Lost Amusement Parks of the North Jersey Shore with George Severini. His latest book is Slave Stories from New Jersey (Publication date: 1/04/2021). He is a Trustee of the Shrewsbury Historical Society; Past-president and a Trustee of the Jersey Coast Heritage Museum at Sandglass House; and a member of the Monmouth County Historical Association.

Sankofa African American 3D Museum Mission Statement

The mission of the Sankofa African American 3D Museum is a virtual learning place that showcases rare collections of historical memorabilia from the 1600s to the 2000s. Our goal is to educate children of all ages (K-12, colleges, and universities), libraries, museums, historical societies, and including worldwide history buffs of all ages.

James Collins “Jimmy” Johnson was a fugitive slave from Maryland who worked on the Princeton University campus for more than 60 years, first as a janitor and then as a vendor of fruits, candies, and other snacks that he sold to the students from a wheelbarrow.

Philosophy

We are making the museum come to life and showcasing a bookstore, a shop, a live café with local restaurants, and fun online to browse. We are providing the opportunity for all to study the fundamental natures of knowledge, reality, and existence while focusing on academic discipline in African American history in New Jersey. The exhibits tell the stories and highlight the culture from the beginning of slavery to the end. Socioeconomic factors and contributions, such as women fighting in World War II, provide insight and inspiration. The focus is on the History of Slavery and the Underground Railroad in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York from the 1600s to the 2000s, with achievements spotlighted regardless of race or nationality.
