Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church (1832)

THE WITHERSPOON STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (1822) BRIGHT HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH OR FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH (1885) PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY

While there are other institutions in the Princeton, New Jersey, area that serve the religious needs of the African-American community, these three churches Mt. Pisgah A.M.E., Witherspoon Street Presbyterian, and Bright Hope Baptist, now called First Baptist Church — have the longest community presence.

Mt. Pisgah A.M.E, the first African-American church in Princeton, was established in 1832.

The Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church, which started when several dozen worshippers at the predominantly White First Presbyterian Church decided to form a separate congregation, began serving congregants in 1840.

Bright Hope Baptist Church, later to be renamed First Baptist Church, was organized in 1885.
