Michele Reid-Vazquez
Michele Reid-Vazquez (B.A., Emory University; M.A., Ph.D. University of Texas at Austin) is an advanced Assistant Professor in the Department of History. Her research and teaching areas are Atlantic World History, with an emphasis on Cuba, the late colonial and modern Caribbean and Latin America, and the African Diaspora in Latin America. Dr. Reid-Vazquez has published articles and reviews in the Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History, the Journal of Caribbean History, and the Hispanic American Historical Review. She has essays and chapters in The Yoruba Diaspora in the Atlantic World, Toyin Falola and Matt Childs, editors; Documenting Latin America: Gender and Race, Empire and Nation, Vol. 1, Erin O’Connor and Leo Garofalo, editors; Africans to Colonial Spanish America, Sherwin Bryant and Ben Vinson, III, editors; the Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History; and the Encyclopedia of Free Blacks and Free People of Color in the Americas. Her book, The Year of the Lash: Free People of Color in Cuba and the Nineteenth-Century Atlantic World (Athens: University of Georgia Press, published November 1, 2011) explores issues of race relations, slavery, exile, and empire. She also has a forthcoming article on black women and rebellion in nineteenth-century Cuba. Her two projects-in-progress explore comparative free black emigration to the Caribbean during the age of revolution and intersections of immigration, race, identity, and gender in the African Diaspora and the Atlantic World (U.S., Spanish Caribbean, and Europe) in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dr. Reid-Vazquez currently serves at the coordinator for the Latin American Studies Graduate Certificate Program and the Latin American Studies Undergraduate Minor. She is also an affiliated faculty member of the Program in World History and Cultures, the Department of African and African American Studies, and Center for Latin American and Latino/a Studies.
