Ann Chirhart

A proud southerner, Ann Short Chirhart received her B.A. from Florida State University and her M. A. and Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta Georgia. Trying to find a way to “tell about the South” has led her to explore southern culture, southern history, southern literature, and all things southern including grits. Her first book, Torches of Light: Georgia Teachers and the Coming of the Modern South, was published by the University of Georgia Press in 2005. She is currently completing a two-volume, co-edited series Georgia Women: Their Lives and Times, the first volume of which was published by University of Georgia Press in 2009. The second volume, in which she also has an essay on Lugenia Burns Hope, is under contract with University of Georgia Press. She has written several articles on women, the New Deal, and African Americans in the South in addition to numerous book, textbook, and manuscript reviews. Her new book project explores southern black women activists in the first half of the twentieth century. Dr. Short Chirhart teaches courses on twentieth-century United States, African American History, United States’ Women’s History, and the African American Freedom Struggle. She loves outdoor sports and playing with her dogs.
