Rossville A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery, Staten Island, NY (1800’s)

ROSSVILLE A.M.E. ZION CHURCH CEMETERY

In this cemetery, overrun with sassafras trees, weathered tombstones mark the graves of the earliest settlers, including Captain John Jackson, the first known resident.  The residents established the Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1850, and their descendants still gather for worship in a building erected in 1897.  Not far from the church, now known as Rossville A.M.E. Zion, is the house that served as a school for the families of the oystermen and their settlement.  Many of the original founders of the settlement are buried at the cemetery, which is a historical site.
