Grave of Ambo, Rahwa, NJ

GRAVE OF AMBO, RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY

This is the gravesite of Ambo, an enslaved Black woman. This inscription on the grave marker reads:

Ambo/Died Sept. 21, 1847 Aged 100 years/ Born of African parents/In the family of/Abraham Terrill/She remained a faithful/Servant to him, his children/And grandchildren until/Her Death. This site shows that some slaveowners buried their slaves in the family plot.  Amboâ is a Hausa name, the Hausas being a tribe found in West Africa, specifically in Nigeria and Niger.  The name was probably given by her parents, who were born in Africa.”
