CURLISS BOLES (1849-1913) CHESTNUT HILL, OLD BRIDGE, NEW JERSEY

In this cemetery, you will find a stone marking the final resting place of a former slave named Curliss Boles.  When Boles was freed from slavery by President Abraham Lincoln, he did not leave the family he served.  The Squires family brought Boles with them from the South to Old Bridge, New Jersey, where he worked in the familys hotel and ice businesses.  In his later years, Boles contracted an incurable disease.  Former owner John Squires provided Boles a small building in which to spend his final days and when he passed away, Squires buried him with dignity and placed a granite marker on his grave.
