Shiloh Baptist Church (1879) Elizabeth, NJ

Shiloh Baptist Church, an outgrowth of the Fourth Baptist Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was organized on May 4, 1879.  It was founded by 16 Christians who desired a church of their own.  The Reverend E. Byrd Gaines served as its first pastor.  Shiloh has the distinction of being the eighth oldest African-American church in New Jersey and the second oldest African-American church in Union County.

The congregation worshipped in several locations until a two-story dwelling was transported to the property on Murray Street 15 years after the church was organized. The first cornerstone was laid in October 1894.  When the membership increased, it became apparent that larger facilities were needed. The present sanctuary was erected and the cornerstone for this edifice was laid in 1923.

Over a period of 116 years, Shiloh has been pastored by 17 educated and well prepared ministers.  Reverend George L. Harris served the longest, pastoring Shiloh for over 50 years, before the mantle of leadership went to Reverend William Ingram in December 1996.
