Joseph Bilby, who has taught military history at Ocean County College in New Jersey, is the author of over 100 articles on military and New Jersey history, including Three Rousing Cheers: A History of the 15th New Jersey Infantry from Flemington to Appomattox. He is also a contributing editor for Military Images Magazine, a columnist for the Civil War News, a member of the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield and the North-South Skirmish Association and a lecturer on the topic of African-American Civil War soldiers. He has B. A. and M. A. degrees in history from Seton Hall University. He also served as a lieutenant with the First Infantry Division in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967.

Historian, lecturer and author Dr. Charles Blockson has traced the network of forests, paths and safe houses (stations) that guided tens of thousands of American Black people from slavery to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Dr. Blockson work has reminded us that slaves did not sit passively waiting to be led out of freedom. He shows us that Black courage and perseverance, along with sympathetic help of White Americans brought many men, women and children out of bondage. He has done more than 25 years of research on the subject, including an article called Escape from Slavery: The Underground Railroad, published in National Geographic Magazine (July 1984). He was also selected as the chairperson of the magazine advisory committee to examine the historical significance of various sites, covering 20 states and territories and including links to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

In the United States, he has participated in and directed excavations in West Virginia, Connecticut and New Jersey. A lecturer, historian and writer, Annette Mark Ellis is a specialist in the history of African Americans in the Richmond section of Staten Island, New York, including the historic Sandy Ground area. She has 20 years of teaching experience, with 12 of those years as a college professor at CUNY. She holds a doctorate degree from CUNY, an M.A. in history from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a B.A. in history from Barnard College, all in New York. While working as a New York correspondent for the St. Maarten Guardian, a leading Caribbean newspaper, Dr. Ellis wrote several articles on African-American history and the history of Blacks in the Caribbean, and is author of The African American Presence on Staten Island. She worked closely with Antelope Valley College for six years, managing its Black History Month activities and developing courses such as The History of Latin America and the Caribbean. She also lectures on a variety of historical topics dealing with women, disadvantaged groups, Africa, the Caribbean and the United States.

Historian William Fidurske, a graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, completed additional studies at Columbia University and Cornell University in New York, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He served in the civilian military during the Vietnam War, and later spent two decades as a federal agent before retiring. Fidurske specializes in the early history of the Stars and Stripes and the New Jersey campaign of 1777. He has been involved in historic preservation efforts such as Vass Farmstead in Hardwick Township, Mount Farm in West Windsor and the Victorian row houses along Essex Street in the Paulus Hook Historic District in Jersey City. He was instrumental in the successful effort to achieve historic registry for Homestead Farm at Oak Ridge, a colonial, Revolutionary War and abolitionist site that today stands across both Middlesex and Union counties as the Oak Ridge Golf Club. He is currently investigating the role of the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad in Central New Jersey.

Reverend Nicholas Genevieve-Tweed, a researcher in the field of African-American studies and a vocal and viable force in the community, is pastor of the historic Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church in Flushing, Queens, New York. Born in London, England, Reverend Genevieve-Tweed came to the United States to attend seminary after graduating with honors in philosophy and social theory from Middlesex University in London. He attended the Turner Theological Institute at the International Theological College in Atlanta, then went on to pursue his doctorate in systematic theology at Boston University. He has pastored at several historic churches, including Bethel A.M.E. in Atlanta and Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Hartford, Connecticut.

Bishop Donald Hilliard, Jr., is the senior pastor of the historic Second Baptist Church in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Under his leadership, the church has grown from 125 members to more than 7,000. This vibrant ministry has expanded to two locations of worship, both in the inner city: The Cathedral Second Baptist Church in Perth Amboy, and the Cathedral Assembly by the Shore in Asbury Park, also in New Jersey. The 50 ministries in these churches reach out to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. June Kennedy is an historian and lecturer on the Township of Morristown, Basking Ridge, and Lamington area.
She is the author of Around and About Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner and Lyons: A Pictorial History of the Area and A Brief History of Bernard Township. Kennedy has written about the Maple Avenue School, Bernard Township Municipal Building and the Washington House/Store Restaurant, all in Basking Ridge. She also has chaired a number of historic projects in Bernard Township and conducts a summer history camp for elementary school students at the Brick Academy, an 1809 federal school that now serves as the headquarters of the Historical Society of Somerset Hills. Kennedy was a staff member of the Bergen Evening Record (now the Bergen Record) and was a contributing writer of Past and Promise, Lives of New Jersey Women; the 1990 Women Project of New Jersey; and Her Subject Mary Alexander, Mother of Lord Sterling.

Frederick Laverpool is president of Braggin About Brooklyn, which highlights the areas African-American historical and cultural sights and enlightens tourists and the community about the many contributions African Americans have made in the development of Brooklyn in particular and America at large. The company numbers among its clients several districts of the New York City Board of Education. . Laverpool has been featured in periodicals and newspaper articles, as well as on television and radio. He is a favorite on the lecture circuit regarding the history and culture of African Americans. He also is the recipient of several awards, most notably the Brooklyn History Award for 2000, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the United States Department of Commerce Tourism Industry. Laverpool has a degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a certificate in labor relations studies.

Kathleen Lindsey (Video)

Kathleen Lindsey is an African-American historian who uniquely combines her talents of quilting and storytelling in theatrical appearances throughout the East Coast, bringing awareness and understanding to all nationalities. She served as president of a local quilting guild and began teaching quilting in craft stores, libraries, schools, churches and community centers. Quilting took on a new perspective when she was featured in Good Housekeeping Magazine, January 1966. Her ancestors, particularly her grandmother, had created diaries on quilts to depict special events in their lives. Lindsey continues that legacy. Her knowledge and interest in African-American history has spawned a successful stage presentation called A Stitch in Time, that been televised on various cable stations and a nationally known documentary program called Visions.

Richard Porter, who serves as supervisor of the Cultural Resource Unit within the Environmental Department, is a lecturer, historian and writer on American history, including African-American history. He also is proficient in historical archaeology and architectural history and regularly lends his technical expertise to historical research, archaeology, and report writing and production. Porter also serves as a tour guide for the Hopewell-Pennington area. A renowned researcher, lecturer, historian and author, Dr. Clement Price is professor of history and director of The Rutgers Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience at Rutgers University Newark campus. His courses span American history, including the Redevelopment of the United States, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the Black Experience in Western Civilization, History of the Civil Rights Movement, and 20th Century Black Modernism. He is the author of many books and articles on African-American history, including the books, Freedom Not Far Distant: A Documentary History of Afro-Americans in New Jersey, and Many Voices, Many Opportunities: Cultural Pluralism and American Arts Policy. Dr. Price serves as the chief historical consultant for the Jewish Museum 1992 exhibition, Bridges and Boundaries: African Americans and American Jews, and for the 1998 award-winning documentary entitled, Chanceman Brothers & Sisters: The Origins of the 20th Century Morris County Black Community. Dr. Price, a native of Washington, D.C., received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and his Ph.D. from Rutgers University. He has served as a visiting professor at Princeton University and Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

Dr. Gordon Vincent, and historian-storyteller, performed as President Abraham Lincoln for historical societies, genealogy societies, women clubs, civic organizations, Civil War roundtables, and Republican clubs. He has appeared at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, as well as parades (riding in the Lincoln coach), on radio (NPR) and television, and at Civil War reenactment and living history events with the New Jersey 3RD Volunteers. Here, as Lincoln, he reviews the troops. Dr. Vincent serves as secretary of the Association of Lincoln Presenters. In the early 50s, after completing his graduate studies there, he joined the faculty at the University of Oregon Dental School. In 1971, he became associate dean of the New Jersey Dental School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, and from 1973 to 1991 served as professor and department chairman there. After retiring, he joined the UMDNJ faculty as a volunteer.

Richard Walling serves as a preservation planner in the New Jersey and New York East Brunswick Historic Preservation Commission in East Brunswick Township, New Jersey. Dr. Randall O. Westbrook, a social commentator and educator, is a member of the clinical teaching faculty of The Peter Samartino School of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University of New Jersey. An honors graduate of Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, with graduate degrees from Rutgers University in New Jersey, Dr. Westbrook has been cited for his scholarship and leadership at the local, state and national levels. His work presenting Black history to fellow church and community members has earned him international acclaim, including an appearance on the Paul Robinson, Here I Stand” program on the PBS acclaimed American Masters series. The Robinson biography premiered in 1999 on more than 500 PBS affiliated television stations across the United States. Urban anthropologist and lecturer Sherrill D. Wilson is creator and operator of Reclaim the Memories, and author of New York City African Slave Owners. She is a contributor to the 1995 Encyclopedia of New York History published by Yale University Press and the New York Historical Society. Dr. Wilson holds a doctorate degree and master degree from the New School for Social Research in New York City. (1991). She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College in Religious Studies. Her company, Reclaim the Memories, gives Black history tours of Old New York, including eight walking tours in Manhattan that highlight the achievements and contributions of Africans there in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Performance artist Kati Beddow Brower took her theatrical training at the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Lee Strasberg Institute, and HB Studios. She written, directed and produced plays in local theaters. Brower also is a blues and jazz vocalist with recording experience and performances in California, Michigan, New Jersey and New York. Brower is a member of the Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation, the Northern Monmouth County Chamber of Commerce, the Matawan Historical Society, a board member at the First Avenue Playhouse and a member of the National Women History Project.
