Jacob’s Chapel A.M.E. Church (1813) Moorestown-Mount Laurel, NJ

This site contains two church buildings belonging to one of the oldest African-American churches in the state of New Jersey.  One of the buildings dates back to the churchs founding in 1813, making it possibly New Jersey’s oldest existing Black church building. A newer building was constructed in 1859 on land donated by Albert Jacob, a Quaker.  Also in 1813, the older edifice, known as the Colemantown Meeting House, was moved from another location to across the street (north-east angle), where it remained until it was relocated to its present site in 1965. The churchyard cemetery contains the graves of African-American Civil War veterans and several members of the Still family, including Dr. James Still.  (See Historic Black Cemeteries for more on church burial grounds and Slavery in New Jersey for more about the famous Still family.)
