Coronavirus Live Updates: Second Unexplained Case Found in California, This Time in Santa Clara County by The New York Times

Coronavirus: Worst-hit countries boost containment efforts – BBC News

The coronavirus outbreak has reached a “decisive point” and has “pandemic potential”, World Health Organization head Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus says. His comments come as countries around the world battle to prevent the virus spreading further. For a second day, more cases have been reported outside than inside China. Iran and Italy have become major centres of infection, with people travelling from there spreading the virus further afield. Several high-profile Iranian officials have become infected, the latest being Vice-President for Women and Family Affairs Masoumeh Ebtekar. New Zealand, the Netherlands, Belarus, Nigeria and Lithuania have confirmed their first virus cases Markets around the world have taken a huge hit from the virus – the Australian Securities Exchange closed down 3.3%, and other Asian markets are down by a similar amount British Airways has cancelled several trips to Italy, Singapore and South Korea A cruise that was turned away from several places has now been allowed to dock in Mexico. A crew member onboard had tested positive for seasonal flu A pet dog owned by a coronavirus patient in Hong Kong was found to have tested “weak positive” for the virus A local sect leader in South Korea, linked to the outbreak there, is to be charged for failing to submit names of members to authorities

The World Health Organization said the virus, found in at least 56 countries so far, poses a “very high” global risk. But the White House accused the media of sowing fear to hurt President Trump.

RIGHT NOW

The new case in Northern California is a patient without known risk factors, raising the possibility the virus is spreading locally.

A second person in Northern California has been infected with the coronavirus without having any known risk factors, such as travel to China or exposure to somebody known to be infected.

The findings hints that the coronavirus may already circulating locally in California, passing from person to person.

Earlier this week, a person who had no known risk factors tested positive for the virus in Solano County, between San Francisco and Sacramento. The new infection is in Santa Clara County, south of San Francisco, which includes the city of San Jose; it was confirmed by Dr. Sara Cody, the county’s public health director.

Hundreds of Americans who were potentially exposed to the virus in Asia have been quarantined at military bases in California, including Travis Air Force Base in Solano County.
